High Schools Hold Heated Debate on a Hot Issue
A very controversial topic created an interesting debate between students from the Julian Cho Technical High school and the Toledo Community College. In front of an audience packed with students, friends and visitors, the panel members debated the following topic: Be it resolved that the final responsibility for the de-reservation of Protected Areas should be in the hands of the Government of Belize.
The debate sparked heated discussions among the presenters and audience members as they had the opportunity to pose questions to their colleagues on the debating teams. This very topic has been in the news recently as the Government has threatened to use its authority to de-reserve protected areas, much to the chagrin of environmental organizations.
The winner of the Debate was the Julian Cho team who represented the preposition, that it is the final responsibility of the government. Well researched and articulated arguments came from both sides. The winners were presented with the prize of $300.00 at their school’s general assembly. The decision of the judges was independent of TIDE’s staff and the content debated was prepared by the students who did their own research.
