Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE)

2006 Annual Summer Camp

TIDE is once again implementing its Annual Summer Camp for kids in southern Belize. This year TIDE is hosting Primary School students between the ages of ten and fourteen from the schools within and buffering Protected Areas in the Toledo District.  For TIDE it is imperative to make these young children aware of environmental concerns and the repercussions of not caring for our natural resources.

With the help of TIDE’s staff and volunteers, the students will be engaged in classroom sessions and seminars informing them about the work of TIDE and how we manage Protected Areas.  They will also be required to make some form of presentation about what they learned to their communities in the form of skits, dance, drama or otherwise.

This year’s theme “OPERATION KNOW THE RULES” will inform young people and their families about the do’s and don’ts in and around the Protected Areas of Toledo.  Students will also be informed on the legal implications of not adhering to the laws of the land.

The highlights of this year’s summer camp will be trips to the protected areas and a football competition between students from the different communities in which the teams must comprise of both males and females.

TIDE’s mission is to promote the sustainable development of the Toledo District Belize by fostering the efficient and effective management of the region's resources, conducting relevant research, and by promoting training and advocacy in order to preserve our natural heritage for present and future generations.  This is where the assistance of our benefactors is paramount.
