TIDE Participates in Solid Waste Disposal in Southern Belize

Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) embarks on a mission to foster community participation in resource management and sustainable use of ecosystems within the Maya Mountain Marine Corridor (MMMC) of Southern Belize for the benefit of present and future generations.

In a joint effort with community members and other local conservation organizations

some of TIDE staff assisted in the removal of an illegitimate garbage site from a wetland

On September 29th 2007, TIDE Executive Director joined other concerned citizens to move an unsightly garbage site to a different location.

ecosystem habitat in the Dump Area -though the name does not signify garbage disposal area- area near Big Falls Village. Big Falls Village is home to some of TIDE rangers and the Rio Grande; which empties into the Port Honduras Marine Reserve flows right through the middle.

For over ten years community members had been disposing of their solid waste at this location even though it is not a garbage disposal site.  Various concerned local NGOs and community members proposed a permanent site in at a different location, away from the road side where visitors pass on a daily basis to go bird watching and tours to communities where the indigenous villagers live.

The indiscriminate disposal posed a threat to a wetland ecosystem that empties into the Aguacaliente Wildlife Sanctuary (AWS).  It is not only hazardous to the wildlife that depends on this habitat, but also endangers residents who live in the Dump Area settlement.

The members and local organizations who participated included; Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA), AWS, Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE), US Peace Corp Volunteers, Machaca Hill Lodge, community members and many others who demonstrated stewardship and responsibility to the natural environment.

TIDE is committed to ensuring that we live in a clean and environment friendly district especially the areas we manage.  We also depend on the donations you make to help us engage the communities in environment stewardship.  Visit our home page to find out how you can become a member of TIDE or to make a donation towards our programs.
