TIDE Scholarship Report (August 2010-June 2011)
TIDE awarded fourteen students from various parts of the Toledo District scholarship opportunities to attend a secondary school of their choice through the TIDE scholarship Program for school semester August 2011 to June 2012. The lucky recipients chose to attend various schools: ten students chose to attend Toledo Community College TCC), two attended Independence High School (IHS) and two at Julian Cho Technical High School (JCTHS). Students are also fortunate to choose their major and their majors include Construction, Science, Business and Vocation.
The students chosen reside within the target communities that TIDE works with such as Punta Gorda Town, Forest Home, Elridge Ville, Cattle Landing, Monkey River, Punta Negra and Big Falls Village. TIDE offers scholarship opportunities to those who reside within the target communities since they heavily rely on the natural resources within their surroundings and within the MMMC. In order to reduce this reliance as a future outcome, TIDE offers educational opportunities and encourages participation of the scholarship recipients to engage in various TIDE activities (Fish Fest, Youth Conservation Competition and Summer Camp) and therefore gaining environmental awareness/education.
It should be highlighted that for the school year 2010-2011, three of the scholarship recipients successfully completed their secondary school education; one graduated from TCC and two graduated from JCTHS. Also, all other students within the scholarship program passed and were promoted. TIDE is very proud to have selected dedicated students that are willing to work hard in order to achieve academic excellence.
Students who complete their secondary education may have to work due to their financial situation, however; others may receive opportunities that will allow them to further their education. TIDE offers the first step in the education process and it is up to the students to take advantage of such an opportunity and utilize it as a stepping stone for their success.
TIDE is grateful for the financial contributions of all donors that allows the youths who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend secondary or tertiary level school an opportunity to up lift their lives. TIDE helps at least one student from the various target communities and with your help we hope to keep this program alive.
