TIDE's Education and Outreach program is a key strategy in providing knowledge about the environment to communities and institutions that depend and live off of the natural resources of the Toledo District.
We can still boast that many of the natural resources of Southern Belize are still intact. However, if we do not stop and think about how human actions negatively impact our environment, all this natural wealth of ours could be lost forever. TIDE, through its Education and Outreach program, continues to work with communities around the protected areas to raise awareness of good environmental practices and sustainable development of the Toledo District.
However, if we do not stop and think about how human actions negatively impact our environment, all this natural wealth of ours could be lost forever.
The Education and Outreach program goes beyond research and monitoring. It provides an opportunity for the general public to participate in the management of TIDE protected areas and also to learn about their natural environment through scientific and fun activities. If we provide information on the importance of conservation to our young generation, we know that in the near future we will have responsible people to manage and care for the environment. A healthy environment will generate healthy people.
Some activities under the TIDE Education and Outreach program include educational field trips to protected areas, school presentations, science fairs and field days, volunteering at TIDE to gain knowledge and experience, capacity building, skills training and many more. Three of our main projects in the Education and Outreach program are the TIDE Freshwater Cup, Summer Camp, and our local radio program. The education programs reach out to a wide cross-section of the Maya Mountain Marine Corridor (MMMC) in the Toledo District and seek to raise awareness on Toledo’s natural resources.
