In December 2009, TIDE actively planted trees with students at two local primary schools: San Miguel and San Pedro Columbia. Trees are a vital aspect of the terrestrial environment, providing habitat to countless animal species and performing services that benefit people such as water retention and carbon sequestration.

The goal of this project was not only to raise environmental awareness but also to provide a source of shade and fruit for students. At both schools, over 60 boys and girls planted 71 trees around their school grounds. Species planted included mahogany, cedar, mayflower, mango, avocado, cacao, moringa, bri-bri, kenèp, and breadnut. The trees came from nurseries within each community that all together house over 5000 saplings--most of these are going to be used for riparian reforestation along the Rio Grande or its tributaries.
