The Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) embarks on its annual TIDE WEEKEND from October 7th – 10th, 2011 in Punta Gorda Town. The TIDE weekend is a celebration and recognition of our conservation efforts in southern Belize, promotion of the International Year of Forests, an opportunity for stakeholders including fisher folk, artisans, restaurants and hotel owners to make an income and a great way of welcoming the 2012 tourist season.
To start off this grand weekend will be TIDE’s first annual Seafood Gala/Awards Ceremony on Friday, October 7th. This semi-formal event will give every attendee the opportunity to savor Toledo’s seafood - buffet style and to recognize outstanding stakeholders in Toledo. To compliment all the delectable seafood cuisine, Toledo’s very own Coolie Rebels Band will entertain the audience along with talented Belizean artists. It’s going to be a night of great food, cultural entertainment and community interaction.
On Saturday, October 8th, we will host the Fifth Annual Youth Conservation Competition, where youths compete for Associate Degree Scholarships by making stage presentations on the theme, ‘The Value of Forests.’ This competition allows the contestants and audience to learn about the work of participating organizations and to appreciate the value of our forest.
The 9th Annual Toledo Fish Fest kicks off on Sunday October 9th at the TIDE Compound with an early morning fishing tournament in the Port Honduras Marine Reserve. This year the tournament will promote sustainable fishing of fin fish species. The day’s events include a series of traditional fun activities such as coconut husking, cast net throwing along with other activities such as a kayak race, a volleyball tournament, greasy pole and many games for kids. There will be a variety of local food and beverages for sale.
On Saturday October 8th and on Monday October 10th, TIDE Tours will offer day tours at a discounted rate for attendees to learn more about what Toledo has to offer. Come and experience the natural beauty of the Toledo District this Columbus Day Weekend. TIDE is looking forward to seeing you in Punta Gorda!
