MONITORING OFFICER
The Environmental Research Institute (ERI) is a department of the University of Belize with a mission to continuously build national scientific capacity for the effective management, sustainable use and conservation of Belize’s natural resources. ERI will accomplish this by being the premiere environmental research institute in Belize and highly respected in the region, providing sound science and creating a culture of evidence-based decision-making in the public and private sector in areas relevant to sustainable development. The ERI announces a vacancy for the post of Monitoring Officer.
Position: Monitoring Officer
Summary of Responsibilities/Oversight: In consultation with the Science Director (Marine) and Science
Director (Terrestrial) is responsible for the development and coordination of national biodiversity and natural resource management (NRM) monitoring programs and other related programs within the ERI. In addition, is responsible for liaising with the database administrator to ensure that the biodiversity monitoring database and other NRM monitoring databases are properly maintained, and for preparing regular reports on monitoring activities.
Knowledge and Skills:
· M.Sc. in biology, natural resources management or related field
· Two years of experience with developing and implementing monitoring programs
· Knowledge and experience with GIS software and mapping would be an asset
· Ability to organize time and manage diverse activities
· Proven ability to manipulate, analyze, interpret and publish data
· Proficiency in data handling and statistical software package such as SPSS
· Excellent writing skills in English and demonstrated use of information technology
· Proficiency in MS Word, Power Point, Excel, ArcGIS or similar GIS software
Complexity/Problem Solving:
· Ability to think critically, to analyze problems logically and comprehensively and to identify and implement solutions.
Working Conditions/Physical Effort:
· Willingness to travel and work flexible hours.
