Vacancy for PHMR Head Ranger

The Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE), is seeking a Head Ranger for the Port Honduras Marine Reserve.
 
MAJOR FUNCTION:
 
Your overall responsibility will be to support your immediate supervisor, the Marine Manager, in ensuring the smooth and effective implementation of all activities within the Marine Reserve.  You are expected to ensure all activities are carried out with outmost consideration for the conservation of the Marine Environment. 
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Under the direction of the Marine Manager , oversee and implement daily patrols within PHMR, as well as coordinate special patrols when required.
  2. Work with Marine Manager to oversee the daily managerial activities of the reserve and ensure that all reserve employees under your supervision are working up to standard and fulfilling their duties and responsibilities.
  3. Assist in conducting performance evaluation of staff under your supervision every six months.
  4. Work with management of the PHMR to develop resource protection goals and strategies.
  5. Oversee resource protection programs in context of compliance with the marine reserve regulations.
  6. Provide logistical support and general assistance to PHMR research team within PHMR.
  7. Ensure good housekeeping and security of the ranger station at Abalone Caye and the good care and handling of work tools and equipment, e.g. boats, outboard engines, and compressor.
  8. Assist the Marine Manager in updating the annual Hurricane Response Plan for the Marine Reserve, as well as ensuring the implementation of the plan in the event of a Hurricane or natural disaster. 
  9. Meet and greet tourists and visitors of the reserve, take them on tours when required and ensure the proper documentation of all guests of the PHMR.
  10. Makes regular reports to the Marine Manager.  These include weekly surveillance and patrol reports, engine and boat check reports and visitor reports.
  11. Ensure the effective and accurate collection and weekly reporting of visitor’s entrance fees collected from foreign visitors to the Marine Reserve.
  12. Work with Marine Manager to ensure continued communication with TIDE’s Community Liaison Officer for activities being carried out in Monkey River.

 
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Participate in meetings and workshops that are related to the management of the marine resources.
  2. Make presentations to the reserve visitors.
  3. Perform other incidental and related duties as required and assigned. (When needed you may be called upon to assist the managers of the other protected areas, i.e., PCNP or the Private Lands Initiative Program)

EDucation and experience:

  1. At least two years’ experience as a supervisor and holding at least an associate degree (or equivalent) in Natural Resource Management or other related field.  Applicants with a High School diploma and at least five (5) years progressive supervisory experience can apply.
  2. Boat Handling Experience
  3. Knowledge of servicing and maintenance of boats
  4. Professional appearance and demeanor
  5. Knowledge of Marine Protected Areas
  6. Good Public Relations Skills
  7. Computer Literate, Self-motivated
  8. Case File Compilation and Bi-lingual skills would be an asset
