This venue also provides a forum for check and balance into the implementation of activities under projects being implemented.

Environmental Defense Fund/Consultation Meeting

On June 5th 2009, rangers from Port Honduras Marine Reserve and I assisted Mr. Nicanor Requena in conducting a consultation meeting for the fisher folks in Monkey River Village. The purpose of the meeting was to share with the fisher folks the concept of Catch Shares. The meeting did not have a great number of participants. I feel the tremors from the Earthquake contributed the low turn out.

As a follow up activity to the meeting with Mr. James Azueta from the Fisheries Department, Mrs. Celia Mahung sent an email to Mr. Azueta on the topics that were discussed and the items the department promised to assist the Port Honduras Marine Reserve. After careful consultations with the donors, three more terrestrial stewards were added; in an effort to create an even number between the marine and terrestrial stewards. For the month of June the stewards participated in a Fire Management Training done by Mr. Mario Muschamp. The training was done at the ranger station in Payne’s Creek National Park. The training was held on June 11th 2009. The stewards got the opportunity to learn the importance of fire and also its detrimental effects it can have on the natural environment.
